Gymnast Simone Biles and swimmer Katie Ledecky were the undisputed stars of the American 2016 Olympic team- coming away with numerous gold medals and annihilating the competition in just about all of their events.

So perhaps it is no surprise that they are born just three days apart, in March of 1997. Simone was born on March 14, 1997 and Katie was born on March 17th of the same year. While both Simone and Katie have the sun sign of Pisces, there are significant differences in their birth charts as well, which highlight their differing strengths and focus.

Pisces is a instinctual water sign that is marked by faith, trust, and spiritual and emotional attunement to life. Both of these brilliant athletes have had to follow their own unwavering faith in their dreams.

But two interesting, and telling, astrological shifts happened in the three days between their births. Both communicative Mercury, and the moon, changed signs. While the moon changes signs about every 2 or 3 days, Mercury only changes signs about once or twice a month so this is significant.

Simone has Mercury in her sign of Pisces, and the moon in airy Gemini. Whereas in Katie’s chart, Mercury has moved on to the sign of Aries and the moon is moved into the sign of Cancer.

In Simone’s chart, the Pisces/Gemini emphasis maximizes the mutable element strongly. In astrology, mutability is connected to adaptability, dexterity and flexibility- all qualities that are not only important, but essential in the field of gymnastics. Interestingly, three out of four of her teammates (Aly Raisman, Laurie Hernandez, and Madison Kocian) all have the sun sign of Gemini.

Katie’s Aries/Cancer aspects, on the other hand, emphasize the cardinal modality which is associated with movement, assertion and perseverance- qualities that are more in line with the type of strength endurance that is necessary for a swimmer. Additionally, Katie’s moon sign of Cancer also reinforces the water element, where she clearly feels most at home.

A final interesting note about their charts, is that both of them have the sun in Pisces in close opposition to active Mars in Virgo. Mars in Virgo has qualities of a hard worker and a perfectionist. It has long been asserted that Mars, the planet associated with strength and competitiveness, is an important factor in the charts of athletes. However, in March of 1997, Mars was in one of it’s rare retrograde periods, which occurs over a period of about 10 weeks, roughly every other year. The fact that both Simone and Katie, some of the most incredible athletic champions to come out of American sports in the past decade, have Mars retrograde, lends strong credibility to the emerging theory that the inner planets (Mars, Mercury and Venus) are not destabilized, as much traditional astrology would posit, during their retrograde periods, but are indeed indicative that those planets are asserted even more strongly, perhaps in unique and brilliant ways.

Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan and Pete Sampras are other athletic superstars who have Mars retrograde.
