The Beautiful Black Swan

Darren Aronofsky’s psychological thriller “Black Swan”, set in the world of professional New York City ballet, echoes the themes of Gemini, Scorpio and Leo- the signs of the films three star ballerinas.

Gemini Natalie Portman leads the cast in a film based on the classic ballet whose plot is centered on the war between the virginal white swan and her evil twin, the black swan- how apt for a Gemini to play two parts. The ballet itself is deeply dualistic, as is the movie, where Natalie’s character Nina is probed to connect with her own two evil twins- her self-sabotaging shadow side and her alluring doppelganger rival Lily, played by Mila Kunis.

Winona Ryder steals her few scenes and elevates all of the Scorpio currents that dominate the story- sex, death, decay, regeneration, self-exploration, jealousy, destructive impulses, obsession, and the dark side of human nature. Imagery of skin is shown repeatedly throughout the film and both the snake, shedding it’s old skin, and the Phoenix rising from the ashes of destruction back into birth and freedom are symbols associated with Scorpio. While the bird itself is a Gemini symbol, always desiring movement and expression, but so often found caged.

At its core the film is also about the quest for perfection, for the confidence and ability to be the best, to be the star, to captivate the world, to be the prima ballerina. These are Leo themes as Leo represents the world of creativity and the relationship between a star and their audience. Leo Mila Kunis captures the effortless star quality- magnetic, talented, capable, sexy, desirable and strong.

These three actresses, and sets of themes, collide in a world perfectly orchestrated by Aquarian Aronofsky. Aquarians are the most fixed, set in their ways, and often uncompromising sign in the zodiac so we can be sure he had his hand in each and every detail. And the riveting ”Swan Lake” music itself was composed by Taurus Pyotr Tchaikovsky, a sign ruled by Venus, goddess of all things artistic and beautiful.

And while the film itself might not exactly have a fairy tale ending, Natalie Portman may have gotten hers; she fell in love with her male lead, dancer- and fellow Gemini- Benjamin Millepied, on set. The two are now engaged and expecting their first child.

Don Draper: The Pisces Anti-Hero

Recently voted askmen.com’s #1 Most Influential Man of 2010, fictional Don Draper has had quite a year. Played brilliantly by Pisces actor Jon Hamm, Don Draper epitomizes the best and the worst of the Pisces man.

Pisces is a water sign, and the most intuitive, sensitive, soft, creative soul in the zodiac. Like other water signs they pick up immediately on all of the cues in their environment and use this information to their advantage. As an advertising guru, Draper’s ability to instinctively understand his clients, their needs and what will appeal to their consumers is nothing less than spectacular. And it is this gift that has landed him at the top of his game despite the shadow side of his sign that haunts him.

Pisces has rulership over drugs, alcohol, institutions, self-destruction, self-deception, addiction, and illusion. The same mystical realm from whence their brilliant creative ideas spring, can often drown them. The character of Don Draper is in every way mixed up with deception and illusion as Don is in fact a false, assumed identity, one that was stolen from his commander during the Korean war. The mysteries over his murky identity have been central to his character development at work and to the eventual dissolution of his marriage to Betty, played by Capricorn January Jones.

As Season 4 progressed this fall, we see Don come face to face with a crucial turning point: the opportunity to come clean about his identity and move his life forward in a different direction. Anxiety from a government probe into his background causes a personal and professional calamity for Don and in his darkest moments he confesses his secret to his lover, Dr. Faye Miller. She is a peer of Don’s, an equal in terms of age and career, and she assures him in the following weeks that together they can solve his problems.

In the last episode of the season it becomes clear, however, that Don does not want to face his past, solve his problems and begin a new life with Faye. Instead he prefers to quickly convert his fling with his secretary, Megan, into an engagement because she is easy going, good with children and will play the part of perfect wife in his “perfect life” just like Betty before her had done. Denial, denial, denial. Anther Pisces specialty. And a coincidence that she is Canadian should he run into any more troubles with the government?

The choice between Megan and Faye is a clear indication that Don has become totally lost in his self-delusion and will go to any lengths to preserve his sense of (false) personal identity, even though it causes him a great amount of anxiety, to the extent that he is willing to marry a woman he barely knows over a woman whom he can trust and confide in. The icing on the cake is when he tells Megan during his proposal that he “finally feels like himself” around her. There may be a grain of truth in this to the extent that a tremendous amount of what Pisces value in their relationships is to be with someone who is strong and can even act as a shield or buffer between them and their need to be alone with their feelings and moods, and the harsh outside world. Don cannot handle his reality so he moves deeper into the darkness of his assumed role, stylishly and with a glass of whisky, of course.

Venus Retrograde

October 8- November 18, 2010

Have you suddenly started waxing nostalgic about an ex? Crossed paths with a former fling who has re-ignited your curiosity? Starting having confused feelings about friends and lovers? Decided that the relationship that you are in has some potentially insurmountable flaws? Or scrapped an important project to move forward in a different creative direction?

If so, then you too are feeling the effects of Venus retrograde. Venus is the planet of love, beauty, harmony and balance and as such plays a crucial role in our love life. While the changeable moon, ruling our daily moods and emotional needs, blazes through the zodiac each month keeping the wheels of our lives spinning at an exciting pace, Venus takes her slow, sweet time moving through the signs and only goes retrograde roughly every other year. A retrograde is when a planet appears to move backwards through the sky, and astrologically signifies a time of reappraisal and  re-evaluation.

With Venus retrograde our relationships are up for review. There is also the potential for people from the past to re-emerge so now would be a good time to reach out, even to old friends or colleagues, anyone whom you would like to renew a relationship. But Venus retrograde is not a time to rush. Best simply to be available, observant and self-aware. Are there relationship patterns that have been plaguing your love life forever that you would like to banish once and for all? Now is an ideal time to bring awareness to your patterns and release them.

With Venus also having rulership over art, now is also a crucial time for anyone in an artistic profession. If you have been struggling or moving in the wrong direction creatively, now is a time to get back in touch with your true values and priorities and re-set your course. Put away what is not working and polish the diamond on the shelf, work only on what you truly care about. Do not, however, throw caution to the wind and announce a wild makeover of your creative style or anything else for that matter. Simply trim the fat and move forward in a more authentic, cohesive manner.

If you are able to turn Venus’s eye for true quality, value, purpose and harmony onto your relationships, and renovate, so to speak, your creative and emotional output, this will serve you very well indeed until the next time Venus reverses in May 2012.

Free Will, Birthday Twins and Astrology

A client of mine emailed me recently with an interesting question. She said:

“Because a natal chart is based on the time and place you were born, does that mean that whomever was born on the same day, at the same time, in the same hospital as I has the same natal chart (and is living a similar life)? Just a thought…”

I thought that this was a very astute question and that perhaps my response to her could shine some light on this subject for everyone:

Two people born in the same city within a short window of time of each other (within roughly 30 minutes) do indeed have many things in common. (Any more time than this would shift a significant number of planets from one house to another indicating different areas of life are activated by the planets, so the charts would not really be the same).

Personality wise, what this means is that these two people have very similar POTENTIAL. You can think of each of the planets in signs (ie. Sun in Taurus, Moon in Aries, etc) as expressing a SPECTRUM of possible behaviors. This spectrum flows more or less along the lines from the deeply unconscious/reactionary/negative sign traits towards more conscious/deliberate/positive sign traits. So even if these two people have the same sun/moon/etc signs etc, they will likely find themselves located in different places along the various spectrums of how they EXPRESS those placements. And of course as we get older and make our decisions and live our lives, our positions along these spectrums can/does/should change. Ex. While I may express some of the more destructive habits of my moon in Scorpio as an adolescent, as I mature I am able to tap into the power of the moon in Scorpio in a healthier way for personal healing and transformation. This is one place where free will in astrology shows itself.

In terms of the “similar life” that you asked about, this has more to do with what houses the planets are located in (the areas of life they affect) and how progressions and transits are affecting these planets. So while Saturn is in Libra TODAY and the moon is in Capricorn TODAY- in 2010- these transiting planets are affecting these two individuals in the same way- IE, in the same area of their life. So in this sense, the EMPHASIS in their lives at any given time are indeed similar. So if slow moving Saturn, for example, is transiting through their 2nd house of finances at the moment (and for the next several years) undoubtedly both of these people will be preoccupied with all of the THEMES associated with 2nd house- lifestyle, money, investments, possessions- joining up with the THEMES associated with Saturn- durability, results, practicality, effort- and will be focusing on re-prioritizing their lifestyle and their financial decision making. However, the exact EXPERIENCES they will have during this transit of Saturn to their 2nd house, is determined by the very personal and unique choices they have made up to this point in their life so will be different. Again, free will and astrology coexist.

Star Tattoo

“I’m a Virgo and the sign is a virgin. So when I was 16, I got the word virgin tattooed on my wrist, thinking I was sooo deep and cool. And now I just look really weird having virgin written across my wrist and I have to explain it.”

Baby is a Leo

Just 5 days after his own birthday Leo racing champion Jeff Gordon, and his Scorpio wife Ingrid, have just added a new member to their family- a son who was born on August 9. His sun sign is Leo, his moon sign is Leo and his name is Leo! Baby is a Leo! Congratulations to the pride.
