What’s in a name?

Gorgeous Taurus actress Uma Thurman gave birth to her third child, a daughter, on July 15, 2012 and her fans have anxiously been awaiting news of the baby’s name ever since. It was announced this week that the little girl is Rosalind Arusha Arkadina Altalune Thurman-Busson, affectionately known to her friends and family as “Luna”. Anyone familiar with astrology will know that another name for the moon is Luna, and the moon is the celestial body that rules the sign of Cancer. Uma is certainly aware of this fact, as she has grown up in a Buddhist household, where knowledge of and belief in astrology is ingrained. Her eldest daughter, who is also a Cancer, is named Maya, another deeply spiritual name which references “the world of illusion” in which we dwell, only a manifestation and creation of the true spiritual world. Her son’s name is Levon, meaning “lion”.

Her fiance, Swiss businessman Arki Busson, is an Aquarius. And her ex-husband, Ethan Hawke, is a Scorpio. She clearly likes very strong, independent and original men. Her own sign of Taurus is gracious, determined and loving. Taurus is also ruled by Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. How cosmically fitting that Uma’s first acting role was as Venus in “The Adventure’s of Baron Munchausen”.

Venus Retrograde

May 15 – June 27, 2012

Have you suddenly started waxing nostalgic about an ex? Crossed paths with a former fling who has re-ignited your curiosity? Starting having confused feelings about friends and lovers? Decided that the relationship that you are in has some potentially insurmountable flaws? Or scrapped an important project to move forward in a different creative direction?

If so, then you too are feeling the effects of Venus retrograde. Venus is the planet of love, beauty, harmony and balance and as such plays a crucial role in our love life. While the changeable moon, ruling our daily moods and emotional needs, blazes through the zodiac each month keeping the wheels of our lives spinning at an exciting pace, Venus takes her slow, sweet time moving through the signs and only goes retrograde roughly every other year. A retrograde is when a planet appears to move backwards through the sky, and astrologically signifies a time of reappraisal and  re-evaluation.

With Venus retrograde our relationships are up for review. There is also the potential for people from the past to re-emerge so now would be a good time to reach out, even to old friends or colleagues, anyone whom you would like to renew a relationship. But Venus retrograde is not a time to rush. Best simply to be available, observant and self-aware. Are there relationship patterns that have been plaguing your love life forever that you would like to banish once and for all? Now is an ideal time to bring awareness to your patterns and release them.

With Venus also having rulership over art, now is also a crucial time for anyone in an artistic profession. If you have been struggling or moving in the wrong direction creatively, now is a time to get back in touch with your true values and priorities and re-set your course. Put away what is not working and polish the diamond on the shelf, work only on what you truly care about. Do not, however, throw caution to the wind and announce a wild makeover of your creative style or anything else for that matter. Simply trim the fat and move forward in a more authentic, cohesive manner.

If you are able to turn Venus’s eye for true quality, value, purpose and harmony onto your relationships, and renovate, so to speak, your creative and emotional output, this will serve you very well indeed until the next time Venus reverses in December 2013.

Virgo Fashion Idol: Stella McCartney

September 13, 1971 London, England noon* (time unknown)

September is the month for fashion, as the Spring runway shows are presented from New York to Milan to Paris, and the fashion industry is plunged from its lazy summer days in St. Tropez and the Hamptons back into full throttle ‘next-greatest-thing’ mode. It is perfect timing, as September is the month of Virgo, a sign which has a discriminating eye, impeccable taste, great attention to detail and a preference for well tailored simple styles. One of the Virgo fashion designers who best exemplifies the Virgo fashion sensibility is rock progeny and first class designer Stella McCartney. First as head designer for the label Chloe and then as the powerhouse behind her own eponomous brand, Stella has not only helped bring the Virgo look to the hipsters and actors who favor it, but also embodied the Virgo energy in many areas of her life.

Virgos are sensible and sensitive, aware of everything around them and fussy about what foods, products, fabrics and people they allow to penetrate their well constructed world. Stella is the daughter of Beatles legend Gemini Sir Paul McCartney and his wife Libra Linda McCartney, a photographer and vegetarian activist. Gemini and Libra, both air signs, are trine to each other, which means her parents had a happy marriage, with a strong bond and good communication. Being raised in a happy household likely made her more confident to go after her dreams. However, Virgos tend to suffer from self-doubt and feel a tremendous amount of pressure, self-inforced or otherwise, to be successful. Having such famous parents could have brought this on in her life.

Stella was born with the sun in Virgo conjunct Venus. This signifies a strong artistic disponsition and talent. Venus also represents her mother who was Libra, and Stella was indeed very close with her mom. Her bond with her mom is also shown by her moon in Cancer, the emotional sign of feminity and motherhood. Strong-willed Pluto at 29′ Virgo also joins her sun and Venus, lending her the air of severity and intensity which penetrates her aura, always balanced though, by feminine Venus. Virgos often have strong moral convictions, which go along with their fussiness about what enters their lives, and in Stellas case, her mothers firm beliefs about animal rights and vegetarianism, have led Stella to continue this crusade. She does not use silk, fur, lambs wool, or leather in any of her designs and her skincare line is 100% organic. Almost all Virgos feel strongly about treating their bodies kindly, thus along with her vegetarian diet, she exercizes regularly and has a partnership with adidas to design fashionable work-out wear.

Her designs for the Stella McCartney line have been simple, feminine and stylish while also strongly utilizing a menswear influence, which is a Virgo signature. The colors that appear most often are cream, antique rose, blue and gray. Gray and cream are colors favored by Virgos, while the pink shade shows her Venus side, and blue and cream show her watery Cancer moon. She likes women to look polished, comfortable and feminine, without the need for too many bells and whistles. Reflecting a bit of her Virgo self-consciousness, she has stated that “I can honestly say this industry hasn’t made me neurotic about my looks, except maybe my weight. I hope my clothes kind of reflect that. They’re meant to make you feel good, not give you more hang-ups.”

On August 30, 2003, while the sun was in Virgo, she married published Alisdhair Willis. It is often a great choice to marry when the sun is in your native sun sign, as this indicates an energy that is positive and happy to you. They have four children. It seems Stella is taking a relaxed approach to parenting, encouraging her children to be creative and follow their own dreams without too much structure. Stella, like most Virgos, has always chosen to keep her personal life private, rarely talking about her famous family, and managing to remain above the fray during her much-publicized fued with her one-time step-mother Capricorn Heather Mills, never speaking publicly on the subject. Among her closest friends are Aries Kate Hudson, Libra Gwyneth Paltrow, Capricorn Kate Moss and Cancer Liv Tyler.

Sexy Aries 2009

mandymoore_21On February 2nd, the sexy, sultry goddess of a planet Venus slid into Aries. While Venus usually makes her rounds through the zodiac quickly, rarely gracing one sign with her presence for more than a month, she has decided that 2009 would be a great time to shower Aries with her affection and she will be residing in this feisty, hot-blooded sign through early June. With Venus having rulership over our love nature, and being especially important in the charts of women, we should all get ready for what is sure to be an exciting adventure.

While Venus usually likes to express herself in subtle, graceful ways (through her favorite signs Taurus and Libra) in Aries her more aggressive, determined side comes out. Anyone who knows a female Aries can tell you that this woman wants what she wants and usually gets it- NOW. Especially in the love department. These are the women who confound their boyfriends with their disarmingly un-mushy behavior, and often suffer from a decidedly low attention span with their helpless male suitors.

All women will be feeling this Aries tingle in their love lives for the next several months. Perhaps this has something to do with the strange shift in sexual power dynamics that is happening as a result of our unfortunate economic climate. Women are no longer conniving their way into the good graces of the macho providers of the good old stock market bubble days, but rather have morphed into ambiguously patient partners coaxing their nervous lovers through troubled times while also recognizing the obvious opportunity to demand that more of their own needs get met.

Aries themselves, both male and female, will of course be feeling this energy the most intensely. Just in the past week it has been announced that two Aries Hollywood beauties, Claire Danes and Mandy Moore, both with an impressive checklist of attractive ex-boyfriends (all Aries women do), have gotten engaged. Expect more of this in the months to come.

If you are a single Aries, get thee out of the house and to some parties because you will be a shining, sexy magnet for the next 4 months. If you are an Aries who is madly in love, these could be some of the best months of your life. If you are an Aries who is attached but unhappy, get unattached fast so you can cash in on this action.

To a slightly lesser extent, this energy will be affecting Libra, the opposite sign of Aries. Because Aries falls in Libra’s partnership sector in the zodiac, the love lives of Libras will be decidedly more dramatic than usual. This could either titillate or terrify the aloof Libras who are quite disarmed by such assertive, determined and seemingly reckless behavior showing up in their personal lives. Relax, Libra, you will almost certainly enjoy it!

Just remember though, Venus in Aries will be retrograde through most of March, which adds an even more chaotic and unpredictable aura to this already impulsive energy. Best to avoid getting down on bended knee this month. Also, if you are feeling the makeover itch, which Venus in Aries also inspires, don’t do anything too dramatic in March.. it will most certainly not turn out quite as you had hoped.

But everyone should enjoy Venus in Aries! And women take note: Ask for what you want. Or just demand it.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

CHRISTINA RICCI

BIRTHDAY GIRL
February 12, 1980 Santa Monica, CA noon* (time unknown)

Child star turned indie movie goddess Christina Ricci turns 28 today. Christina first hit the big time as the unforgettable Wednesday Adams in “The Adams Family” movies when screen legend, Cancer Anjelica Huston played her mother. This was only after playing daughter to the one and only Cher, a Taurus, in her first film, “Mermaids”. Not a bad way to start out in Hollywood. Aquarian girls a little bit quirky, into their own thing and good at playing equally unusual roles. The Aquarian is a very fixed personality, she is set in her ways and true to herself, and this helps her figure out what is right for her early on in life and not bother with the rest of it. As an actress it also helps her get into characters who are also very fixed personalities, playing their addiction or neurosis or indifference to a tee. So it is no surprise that some of Christina’s most memorable roles are the morbid Wednesday Adams, a mentally ill student in “Prozac Nation”, a manipulative drifter in “The Opposite of Sex” and most recently a nymphomaniac in “Black Snake Moan”. Christina is also one of those rare actresses who can bounce between shooting major studio movies, television guest spots and well-recieved indies with ease. Again, she knows what works for her, she enjoys her work and she doesn’t subscribe to anyone else’s dictums of the do’s and don’ts of Hollywood. And she has all the better career for it.

Christina’s self confidence and fixed personality also come across in her fashion sense. Like most Aquarian women, she finds a look that works for her early on and doesn’t budge. Well maybe not too early on. Many Aquarians falter a bit in their very early years, going for looks that are either too matchy-matchy or downright clownish and costumey. It is really only once they start to get who they are and into their groove that their style becomes as steady and consistent as their famous work ethic. For Christina this means classic, traditional looks with a modern edge. Never too preppy or uptight, she nonetheless manages to go for looks that are simple, casual and chic, with minimal jewelry and accessories. There are some Aquarians whose fixed style is monochrome only (think Jennifer Aniston) but most water-bearers are not afraid of color and can wear deep colors like purple and marigold that other, less assured types find hard to pull off.

Because each Aquarian really beats to their own drum they are perhaps the hardest sign in the zodiac to really make generalizations about their personal style. So the moon sign of an Aquarian lady gives the most hints about her taste. Christina’s moon sign is Capricorn and this expresses itself in her sage business decisions (Capricorn is the sign of career) as well as in her fashion sense, simplifying her wardrobe elements into trusted, high quality classics with a bit of sassy unisex detailing. Venus, the planet of art and beauty, is in Aries in her chart, showing that she enjoys being spontaneous and active and thus comfort is important for her looks as well. Her cool, classic, independent style has made her a favorite of Calvin Klein’s Francisco Costa, Louis Vuitton’s Marc Jacobs, and the Proenza Schouler team.
