Aries Fashion Idol: Marc Jacobs

April 9, 1963 New York, NY  noon* (time unknown)

Marc Jacobs is perhaps the most influential designer of his generation. As the grunge era replaced the gauche power dressing and over-exposure of the 1980s, Marc Jacobs rose easily through the fashion ranks by celebrating a more modest, casual, ‘slouchy chic’ that better describes the ethos of the young (and rich) creative class. This was a revelation in fashion and one that has stuck. It wasn’t deliberately dirty and androgynous like some of the 1990s attempts to overthrow exuberant eurotrash, but simply more wearable, more understated and definitely more cool.

Aries like Marc are trend-setters. Being the first sign of the zodiac, amongst the ranks of Arians are many people who have been ‘firsts’ in their field and whose contributions have ushered in a new era. The Marc Jacobs era in fashion has been alive and well now for nearly two decades, at least since he won the coveted CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year award in 1992.

Aries are an active sign and they prize comfort and wearability in their designs. Unlike the Pisces designer who sees his work as a piece of art, the Aries imagines the active life of his garments. And a Marc Jacobs piece is perfect for it’s customers; it can transition from work at the art gallery to late dinners and lounging and with ease. Marc is of course also the creative director of Louis Vuitton. Since taking the helm there in 1997 he has quadroupled the esteemed design houses profits with his creative collaborations with artists such as Takashi Murakami. And his clothes for that line as also perfectly wearable for their jet set clientele.

One of his chief weapons has always been his Juergen Teller advertising campaigns. Choosing the unexpected cultural icon at every turn, Aries Marc always keeps ahead of the curve. Recently, he has been making waves with Annie Liebowitz pictures of aging stars of every variety in hotel rooms posed candidly next to their Louis Vuitton luggage. But it was his 1990s campaigns with unconventional beauty Taurus Sofia Coppola that were perhaps the most revolutionary and memorable. Coppola was something of a muse to Jacobs then.

Indeed the Taurus energy has, or had, been a strong part of the Marc Jacobs vibe. Taurus is an earth sign and they prize value, luxury, and quality in their life and in their clothes, but in a subtle, classic even conservative way. Very much like the Marc Jacobs style. Few logos could be more unabashadley expensive than the Louis Vuitton luggage symbol but it is always juxtaposed with the ‘I don’t care’ Aries attitude.

Indeed Jacobs progressed sun has been in the sign of Taurus from the time he was about 11 years old until mid- 2005 [If you are not familiar with astrological progression please refer to my post entitled "Progressions"]. As an Aries, he is impulsive and active but with his progressed sun in Taurus for most of his adult life, he also felt compelled to produce material results (Taurus) and to slowly but surely work towards long term goals. He was interested in creating things and building a solid support system and lifestyle for himself.

In 2005 his progressed sun moved from Taurus into Gemini. This is around the time that a great transformation happened in his life personally and creatively. In many ways this was a transition back to the Aries parts of himself. Gemini energy is also impulsive, curious and restless like the Aries energy. Rather than working tirelessly and diligently behind the scenes (Taurus) he has busted out of his shell and became, on the surface, a whole new man. He has been able to overthrow his Taurean sense of duty and go back to his hedonistic and impulsive Arian ways. He recently told a reporter that ”Whatever makes me feel good, I want more of. If work is going well, I want to do more clothes. If the gym thing is working for me, I want to be bigger. If getting my hair cut makes me look younger, I want to play with the color. ”

Once a poster boy for the slouchy but sophisticated style he eposes donning large glasses and comfy sweaters, he is now sleek and buff, with a new passion for fitness and his much younger sometimes boyfriend. Many fashion insiders have been scratching their heads and have termed this his ‘mid-life crisis’, but it is just his astrological progression, a very natural moving from one phase of his life to another. And it has just begun. One of his best out-of-the-box ideas he has had since the ingress from Taurus to Gemini has been to have professional astrologers Starsky and Cox, authors of the astrological bestseller “Sextrology”, do readings from the windows of his flagship storefront in New York. Brilliant.

Interestingly, one of the things that helped usher in this monumental progression was transit Uranus, the planet of disruption and unexpected events, moving over his natal Venus in Pisces for the past few years. As the planet of art and beauty, Venus is very important in the charts of artists and designers. This has definitely been throwing him some curve balls in terms of redefining his artistic values, ideals and aesthetic, as well as mixing things up, big time, in his love life. His moon sign is either Libra or Scorpio, depending on what time of day he was born, but this would have been affecting him even more strongly if his moon sign is Libra, which is ruled by Venus.

With the Taurus era of his life over, it is likely that the clothes he designs will also transition away from the look he has become famous for and towards a more whimsical, colorful and accessory-heavy style, being influenced now by the Gemini energy. Evidence of the shift was already strong in his Spring 2008 collection where a main theme was duality, with dresses split down the middle uniting two prints. Gemini, is of course, the sign of duality and the twins. One thing is certain though, with his progressed sun having just moved into the sign of the twins, where it will stay for 30 years, Jacobs is feeling more liberated than ever and the new Jacobs will continue to keep everyone guessing, with fresh scandals and more unexpected choices for a long time to come.

La Lohan talks about being a Cancer

lindsay-lohan-stays-sober.jpg

In her latest interview, with Britain’s “Glamour” magazine, young Cancer Lindsay Lohan is candid about some of the events of the past year and also admits how deeply she is influenced by her star sign. Much of Lindsay’s trouble this past year stemmed from an incredibly dramatic progressed chart which saw Mercury retrograde careening backwards at the very beginning of Leo on a collision course with her progressed sun which was just making its transition from Cancer into Leo [See my post entitled "The Lindsay Lohan Crisis Explained"]. For a year they were within one single degree of each other! In her new interview she explains;

“2007 was a rough year… It’s the process of growing up. I’ve learned the hard way but, all in all, you learn and you grow and you become a stronger person… I’ve had to grow up fast. I’ve had a lot of responsibility from a young age… I think lots of people go through dark times, but it’s even harder with everyone watching… The biggest misconception is probably that I don’t have my head in the right place. That, and probably that I’m not a good person. That makes me sad because I actually am… I’m a Cancerian so I’m sensitive and emotional, but very honest- so I don’t like liars. Also I don’t understand people who are mean for no reason.”

Notice the slightly defensive and emotional tone.. very Cancerian indeed. Hang in there, Linds, better astrological luck is on the way!

Astrology & the Sarkozy wedding

Nicolas Sarkozy – January 28, 1955 Paris, France 10 pm
Carla Bruni – December 23, 1966 Turin, Italy 6:10 pm
Marriage – February 2, 2008 Paris, France 11 am (*or slightly later)

One of the most fascinating spectacles in the world of politics and astrology has been unfolding over the course of the past several months and it culminated yesterday with the surprise announcement that the President of France, Aquarian Nicolas Sarkozy, had married his girlfriend of 3 months, Italian former model and singer, Capricorn Carla Bruni, in his Paris office Saturday morning. Speculation had been rampant that the two were planning to wed, maybe even that they were pregnant but the speed at which this courtship took place has left onlookers shocked and riveted.

Well, I guess you could say that Aquarians, ruled by the unpredictable planet Uranus, are made to shock. After all, the first shock of his presidency came when he split with his second wife, glamorous Scorpio Cecilia, who had been instrumental to his campaign, mere weeks after his induction. Sarkozy has his moon in restless, impatient Aries, conjunct Mars, the planet of action that rules Aries. This is a man who follows his instincts and acts swiftly when he has made up his mind. But his unpredictable Uranus is conjunct Jupiter, the planet of good luck, ensuring that his impulsiveness will be a strength rather than a liability. His rising sign is steady, meticulous Virgo, lending him an air of stability and his chart ruler, Mercury, is in Aquarius in his fifth house of personal power along with his sun, giving him tremendous confidence in his own abilities. His progressed sun ingressed from Pisces into Aries in the fall of 2006 as he began his aggressive bid for the Presidency which he secured when he won the election on May 6, 2007.

Bruni shares several interesting astrological aspects with Sarkozy. Like him, she has a strong and impulsive moon placement. Her moon is in Virgo, his rising sign, conjunct passionate Pluto and Uranus. These three planets on top of Sarkozy’s ascendant accounts for how quickly and completely he fell for her. Both of their progressed moons are also in romantic Pisces, giving them both a feeling that this relationship is fated. Her Mars is in his sign of Aquarius so she is connected instinctively with his solar energy. However, his basic nature is outgoing air and fire, while she is a thoroughly measured earth sign woman. Aquarians are radical and intellectual and Capricorns are more conservative and conscious of public image and reputation. But her brand of restraint could be just what he needs at this very important time in his life.

The most detrimental aspects between their charts are the strong Saturn aspects. In astrology, Saturn rules Capricorn and represents restraint, patience, endurance and cold hard reality. Her Saturn is in Aries, conjunct his moon and Mars, indicating that she could try to put a damper on his free-wheeling ways and force him to be more measured with his decision making. His Saturn is almost exactly conjunct her Venus in Scorpio, which is also conjunct Neptune. As an artist, Venus and Neptune in her fifth house is a huge part of her creativity and self-expression. His Saturn there could either help take her artistic endeavors to the next level or could dampen her enthusiasm for her work. In serious relationships, Saturn aspects are important to ensure durability and commitment but the sensitive nature of these placements might serve as a test to these two. They are both going to have to make sacrifices for the other and these aspects could very well define their relationship.

The couple were married just past 11 am on Saturday February 2, 2008 in Paris. The first thing one notices about this date, of course, is that it is very close to Sarkozy’s birthday. Sarkozy was born at 9 degrees Aquarius and the solar degree for this marriage is 12 degrees Aquarius. His stamp is strong on the nature of their relationship. However, Bruni’s progressed sun is also at 12 degrees Aquarius! She will grow and learn much from this marriage and is heavily invested in it, as her progressed sun will continue to evolve along with their relationship. Pluto, the planet of power and transformation, which ingressed into Capricorn on January 25, is very close to her natal sun at 1 degree Capricorn and indeed, as the new First Lady of France, she has, overnight, become extremely powerful. Pluto will remain close to her sun for the next several years.

In the chart of their marriage, retrograde Mercury is coming into tight conjunction with Neptune. This is an interesting aspect as it sometimes indicates people who talk one way and act another. There could be miscommunications or trouble following through on their word, as perceived by others. With the sun, Mercury and Neptune in Aquarius and Pluto, Venus and Jupiter in Capricorn, both of their natal signs are very strong in this chart. Consequently, their relationship will very much echo their personalities, unlike some marriages which seem to have a life of their own, quite unrelated to the parties within it. Again, the most sobering aspect comes from Saturn in Virgo, resting in the fifth house of romance and children. This indicates that the very public nature of his position and their relationship may detract from developing a truly intimate bond, and that they may not have children together.

At the time of their wedding the moon was in Sagittarius, a fire sign. This goes along with the three Capricorn planets they have in the ninth house to show that international travel will be an important part of their life together. With all of the Aquarius planets in the eleventh house of groups, it indicates that they will keep themselves surrounded by a large and supportive entourage. Venus, the planet of love and beauty and ruler of their chart, is beautifully aspected, conjunct Jupiter and trine Saturn, which is a very good sign indeed. And while only time will tell how blissfully this whirlwind romance will turn out, with stubborn, sensual Taurus on the ascendant they will be absolutely determined to sustain a stylish, stable, and unified front.

JENNIFER CONNELLY

jenniferconnelly.jpg
BIRTHDAY GIRL
December 12, 1970 Catskill, NY noon* (time unknown)

The Sagittarius lady is no shrinking violet. And certainly Sagg Jennifer Connelly is striking, beautiful, dramatic and bold. Saggs are some of the most colorful, extroverted, playful and intelligent creatures of the zodiac. They have big personalities, big dreams, big goals and big laughs. And in Jennifer’s case, a big career. Indeed Jennifer is one of the few Hollywood stars whose esteem and celebrity has eclipsed their considerable accomplishments as a child star. Jennifer began acting in 1982, just after her progressed sun moved from Sagittarius into the career oriented sign of Capricorn. And in the Capricorn way, she launched her slow and steady rise to fame to achievement. She has been working ever since.

Jennifer has predominantly Sagittarius (Sun, Neptune) and Scorpio (Venus, Mars, Jupiter) energy. Her sun and Neptune in Sagittarius make her intuitive, sensitive, adventurous and spiritual. And her Venus, Mars and Jupiter in Scorpio strengthen these traits (especially her intuitiveness and spirituality) and also make her act like a Scorpio much of the time. Rather than being extroverted and bold (Sagg) all of the time, she can become withdrawn, moody, obsessive and single-minded. Scorpio is also a deeply subtle and sensual sign and this oozes out her (modifying the sometimes brassiness of Sagittarius). This dual nature can also be seen by her moon in the sign of Gemini, the twins. Those with the moon in Gemini are bright, curious, quick thinking and easily adaptable to a wide variety of situations. But they can also be moody and changeable. It is no surprise that her husband, Paul Bettany, is a Gemini. He is a man who is unintimidated by the size and strength of her personality and happy to let her follow her whimsy and her moods.

The most striking thing about her birth chart, however, is how well balanced her overall energy is. Her planets are spread rather evenly through the signs and elements. Aside from her Sagg (Fire) and Scorpio (Water) placements, she has one planet each in the Earth signs; Mercury in Capricorn, Pluto in Virgo and Saturn in Taurus. These lend her patience, ambition, and practicality and help her to reign in her naturally exuberance and extravagant Sagg/Gemini personality which without such grounding influences can be unrealistic and unfocused. Along with her Moon in Gemini, an Air sign, she has her Uranus in Libra. This means she has two or more planets in each of the elements, which makes for a balanced, well-rounded personality.

Most Sagittarius women love clothes and fashion. Being very active people, they tend to favor comfort highly in their daily lives. When at social functions, however, they loves to command the attention of all with colorful, dramatic, and unusual styles. Sometimes this means bells and whistle, but with such a refined and well-balanced character as Jennifer, this mean fashion-forward high style. Bold florals, deep reds, extravagant accessories, but only of the highest quality and in this seasons (or next seasons) must haves. Jennifer has recently become the muse of Balenciaga head designer Nicolas Ghesquiere, and made a splash recently on the red carpet in an inventive floral from the Spring 2008 collection, touted as the must-have style for the upcoming season.
