The Aquarius Leo Love Story

Opposite signs are notoriously attracted to one another and often forge some of the most enduring and happy relationships. Take for example the beloved royal Cancer/Capricorn couple William and Kate, and globetrotting Sagittarius/Gemini glamorpusses Brad and Angelina.

Well it just so happens that Brad’s former love, Aquarius Jennifer Aniston, has finally found herself in the arms of a Leo man, Justin Theroux, giving her a chance for love with her opposite sign. Justin and Jen have been attached at the hip since hooking up earlier this summer. And they have also been palling around with another Leo, Justin’s friend photographer Terry Richardson (Who took this photograph of them in September).

Aquarians are amongst the most determined, stubborn and routine-oriented members of the zodiac. By the time they are adults they tend to have found their niche, usually one that very few others occupy, and they stake out their territory and dig their heels in. Rinse and repeat. Their niches/lifestyles however, tend to be anything but ordinary. Take Jen for example, who has corned the market on rom-coms, yoga, healthful living, Cabo, and bad-boy boyfriends. Like all Aquarians, she is hardworking, future oriented, and committed to her path.

Leos are the perfect counterpoint to the driven and independent Aquarius. Also incredibly creative and purposeful, Leos can relate to the Aquarians commitment to creating a world and life of their own imagining. Yet Leo’s thrive in warmth and family. We can think of the heat and revelry of the month of August, when Leo thrives, juxtaposed with the privacy and isolation of February when Aquarius rules the days. Jennifer and Justin were born just about exactly 6 months apart, though in different years. Jennifer, on February 11 (1969), and Justin on August 10 (1971).

Moon signs rule our emotional nature, and both Jen and Justin have their moons in impulsive, extravagant and fun loving fire signs, Sagittarius and Aries respectively. These two place a premium on enjoyment in their relationship. And certainly her many fans are happy to see Jen enjoying her life!

The Aquarius Girls Club

There are a variety of powerhouse Leo women in LA; Jennifer Lopez, Halle Berry and Charlize Theron for example. These women are known for being dynamo performers and personalities, yet they are not particularly well know for their camaraderie with other females. Leo women tend to be very close to their families and childhood friends, and otherwise tend to spend time with their partners, acquiantances or associates.

Their opposite sign Aquarius, hosts another bevy of impressive Hollywood women. But with Aquarius being the sign associated with friendship, these stars are known for their close bonds with other women. No fewer than 4 major Aquarian stars can be seen palling around together regularly- Laura Dern, Sheryl Crow, Isla Fisher and Jennifer Aniston. Sisterhood is very important for Aquarian woman and they lean dearly on their close friends. In addition to the Aquarians in this group, they are also tight with Pisces Chelsea Handler, Gemini Courtney Cox, and Libra Naomi Watts.

Aquarius Fashion Idol: Narciso Rodriguez

January 27, 1961 Newark, NJ noon* (time unknown)

Born to Cuban immigrant parents in Newark New Jersey and quickly rising through the ranks of the high fashion world in New York, Aquarian fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez’s story is truly an American dream saga. The most striking thing about his chart is the conjunction of Jupiter, the planet of abundance and good luck, with Saturn, the planets of obstacles and endurance. This conjunction, which happens every twenty years, is thought by many astrologers to be a generational marker, the ushering in of a new wave. It also has mixed blessings for those born under its influence. Often it means that they will have as many downs as ups in their lives and career, that they will have to work very hard to achieve what will ultimately be huge successes, and that some of their greatest accomplishments will also hold the keys to some of their most trying challenges.

This has indeed been the case for the immensely talented Rodriguez. He demonstrated his stubborn and fixed Aquarian personality when he decided at a young age to go into the fashion industry. His parents did not approve but he would not back down; “They wanted me to be a doctor or a lawyer or a dentist. So when I dared to tell them, the shit hit the fan. It was crazy. But no matter how many times I heard ‘No’, I just kept going. I never thought about ‘No’. ‘No’ wasn’t an option.”

After moving to New York, he secured jobs working for Libra Donna Karan under the Anne Klein label in the 1980s, and then in the 1990s moving on to work for Scorpio Calvin Klein. His own label which he launched in 1998, carried on the great American sportswear tradition central to these two brands. His style is perhaps best described as a synthesis of the clean, simple Calvin Klein style with the more romantic yet equally modern designs of Donna Karan. There is volume and softness in his clothes, yet they remain discrete.

In 1996, Rodriguez would have a typical Saturn/Jupiter year, characterized by several highs and lows. After designing a well received collection for the struggling label Cerruti that winter, he was promptly fired for refusing to sign a two year contract. There goes that stubborn Aquarius again. By September, however, he was an overnight celebrity when Sagittarius John F. Kennedy Jr. married his beautiful bride, fashion publicist Carolyn Bessette, in a romantic secret ceremony on a Georgia island. The bride wore a simple pearl colored bias cut sheath designed by her friend Narciso Rodriguez. Suddenly, he was a household name and the slip he designed helped usher in a revolution in bridal wear. What Cancer Princess Diana’s 1981 wedding gown had done for a generation of girls who married with puffed sleeves in the 1980s, Capricorn Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s minimalist gown did for the next decade of brides choosing simple slips for a walk down the aisle. Cancer, after all, is the sign of emotional, comforting layers, while Capricorn style is streamlined and sophisticated.

The publicity from his friends wedding, whom he had met when they were both working for Calvin Klein, gave him the momentum, and financing, he needed to start his own label. His looks became a constant at parties and red carpets from New York to California, easily spotted on his friends like Arians Sarah-Jessica Parker and Claire Danes. 2003 proved to be another years of high and lows however. After becoming the first person ever to win the Council of Fashion Designers of America Womenswear Designer of the Year Award two years in a row, a huge accomplishment, he began an ill-fated partnership with Italian businessman Massimo Ferretti, a manufacturer who owned several other labels. Their business and creative visions for the company differed dramatically and in a few short years Rodriguez realized he was in serious trouble, even at the verge of bankruptcy.

In 2007, with the help of many of his high powered fashion friends, like his former boss Donna Karan and the Scorpio editor of “Vogue”, Anna Wintour, he had managed to pull himself out of that partnership without loosing everything and find a more suitable partner. Ever the embodiment of his Jupiter/Saturn complex, he says of this difficult time in his life, “The worst thing that has happened to me is all of the bad advice I have received. It’s also the best thing. It’s brought me to the place where I am today.” The Liz Claibourne company purchased the Narciso Rodriguez brand in 2007 for $14 million dollars, making it one of the first times a large American manufacturer has dabbled in acquiring in the upscale niche market area. With plans underway for an accessories line and stores, this looks to be a promising partnership.

But one thing is certain, however it turns out, as a Aquarian, Rodriguez will always stay true to himself and the style of work he is passionate about. With his Mars in Cancer (and possibly his moon as well, depending upon what time of day he was born), his artistic Venus in Pisces, and his inspired Neptune in Scorpio, there is a strong water element in his chart. For him fashion is about feeling and emotions and ideas. Not about trends and sudden fads or the shock of the unexpected. As he said way back in 1997, “What I’m trying to capture with the look is something more sensual, more feminine. For me designing is such a personal thing. It’s really emotional- that’s part of my Latin upbringing.” And part of his birth chart.

YEAR AHEAD: AQUARIUS

Dear Aquarius,

You may be one of the most misunderstood, if not the most misunderstood sign in the zodiac, but that has probably never really bothered you too much. You are quite content to smile and nod your head as descriptions of the loosey-goosey new age of Aquarius hocus pocus flies around you, all the while keeping the well oiled machinery of your grand master plan working below the surface. You are in fact one of the hardest working, most determined and most consistent signs in the zodiac. So what if your tastes and ambitions are a little bit off the beaten path? Through trial and error you have learned what they are and little can keep you from achieving them.

In previous years you may have faced tiresome, daunting obstacles in your way. However, this year will be characterized by the smooth flow of all that you have been working for.. right into your lap. The new moon in Aquarius this year holds the sun and moon in tight conjunction with Jupiter, the planet of good luck and optimism, in your 2nd house of personal finance. Ka-ching. And extravagant Sagittarius, Juptier’s favorite sign, is on your ascendant highlighting this theme even more. But as always, when things come too easily, one can get sloppy so a good lesson to remember for this year is “Be careful what you wish for” because it just might show up.

Joining the sun, moon and Jupiter in the 2nd house are Mars and Mercury retrograde in Capricorn. You will certainly be consolidating in your efforts towards building or creating something, as the 2nd house has rulership over artistic projects.. but guard against stubborn aggressive behavior, especially as it relates to winning people over to helping you. Mercury retrograde will be giving them mixed signals.

In your personal relationships this also seems to be an interesting year. Venus, planet of love and beauty, is conjunct wildcard Uranus in Pisces on the cusp of the 4th house of home and family. This could spell any number of scenarios. Aquarius is ruled by Uranus so you have a knack for understanding the positive side of this unpredictable planet and it’s appearance in conjunction with Venus could signal a major love event in your life this year; a commitment, marriage, child or a shared new home. However, this would only be if your relationship can overcome all of the obstacles and reassessments that pragmatic Saturn will been throwing in the way.

You especially will have to take an unflinching look at what is working and what isn’t in your career and make any adjustments. Any issues of how to balance career and family life will be at the center of this conversation.  If that stubborn streak comes out and you don’t want to hear it, then the bad side of this Venus/Uranus aspect could emerge and your entire home/relationship/career world could get tossed into a little tailspin. This is worst case scenario and to make sure that it doesn’t happen, remember to be a good listener.  If you are single, expect to meet somebody new, especially in any type of work related situation or anyone who could have access to your home if you are hosting events or doing renovations. Stay focused but remain flexible and this year is sure to be a truly magical one for you.

LUCKIEST MONTHS:

MARCH 2009: Love is in the air so you will probably feel like ordering a case of champagne and camping out on the homefront for a while. Just be sure to honor any pre-existing career commitments or you could be in hot water.

JUNE 2009: Both work and personal relationships will flourish right now. You will certainly be very busy and sociable, so take in all the new information before making any final decisions.

SEPTEMBER 2009: This is a big work month for you when things will become more clear. Projects will either move forward to get tossed and you should be ready for some turmoil. Know what your values are and what you are willing to put up with.

Project Runway’s Astrology Challenge

Best. Episode. Ever.

This weeks challenge on Project Runway was for contestants, paired with previously eliminated contestants as their assistants, to choose one of the team member’s astrological signs as an inspiration for an avant garde design. Too bad the producers didn’t think to contact Brightstarlights for some insight into astrological fashion! The teams were given a binder of what looked like pretty sparse data concerning the symbol and colors associated with each of the signs.. I could have done so much better! It looks as though the designers worked more or less exclusively with the imagery of the signs symbol when they could have done soo much more. Alas, maybe next season..

The standouts were Joe’s Aries outfit, inspired by the Ram. It was very red and fiery although it could equally well have represented Leo, but was an excellent Aries. Korto’s Aquarius was also amazing, though it had a bit of a free-flowing Pisces vibe as well, where as Aquarius is more structured. But the ruffles down the back were gorgeous and actually mimicked the waves of the Aquarius symbol.

Leanne’s Scorpio creation was another winner, perfectly emulating the sharp sexiness of Scorpio. The winning detail was the mesh covering the eye; Scorpios have very intense eyes and like to keep them covered up!

The winner was Jerrell’s Sagittarius and he deserved it 100%. He managed not only to make an obvious homage to Sagg symbolism (hello, arrow through the hair) but also to hit a wide variety of Sagg themes. Sagg’s are sporty and outdoorsy and his intricate skirt was houndstooth. They are also glamorous and love to be the center of attention and are able to pull off a gold sequined top and jacket with six different trims including feathers. And their love of global culture was represent in the ikat material selected for the jacket itself. Jerrell was working with the “adventurous and fun-loving” aspects of Sagg that he related to and he pulled it off perfectly!

It was so much fun to get to learn the signs of the contestants as well. The big revelation for me was the Air sign ladies who have been dominating this season. Leanne makes the perfect ladylike Libra creations and had won the past two challenges. Kenley and Korto are some of the other powerhouses on the show and unsurprisingly they are both stubborn, fixed Aquarians. All of the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) have very strong preferences and points of view. They do not like to stray from their own aesthetic. You can also see this clearly with the not-so-surprising revelations that eliminated contestants, black-leather-loving Stella is a Scorpio, and “refuse to make anything but conservate cocktail frocks” Jennifer is a Taurus.

I also loved seeing the astrological knowledge pour out of famed fashion designers Taurus Francisco Costa and my own 2008 Leo Fashion Idol, Michael Kors. Costa did not think the Leo look was appropriately dramatic and Kors accused Kenley of acting like a Taurus because she was being so stubborn in defending her bizarre design! He also knew that Leos and Saggs are “supposed” to get along. Real life Taurus Nina Garcia hit the nail on the head when she said that it seemed as though Kenley just decided to do what she wanted to do not caring whether her looked shouted “Aquarius” or not. Exactly, Aquarians are prone to do that.

Another Taurus in the house was guest Judge Fransico Costa, head of womens’ design at Calvin Klein. In a vintage article I found, he had this to say on the topic of astrology; “I’m so Taurus, you would not even believe. All the Tauruses I know have this connection to the earth and the environment. We are very curious people, very loyal, very aware of and respectful of our surroundings. Also we’re stubborn, but that’s our way. We understand what we want, which is not bad.” Very well said indeed.

So does Project Runway have an astrological signature? As I mentioned in my Michael Kors article, the show has a strong Leo/Gemini/Taurus vibe, based on the signs of it’s mainstays and winners, which suits it perfect. As Leos Tim Gunn and Michael Kors encourage creativity and authenticity. As a Gemini, Klum brings the playfulness and links togehter all of the different elements and projects. Taurus Nina Garcia brings the relevant level of refinement and snobbery. The show has had four winners so far. Chloe Dao is a Gemini and Jeffrey Sebelia is a Taurus. Jay McCarroll’s birthday is unknown and Christian Siriano is a Scorpio. There is a strong fixed vibe at Project Runway (think: “We want to see your point of view as a designer”) and since there are no remaining Taureans, Leos or Scorpios in the competition, my money would have to be on an Aquarius and I think Korto is the one to beat.
